kinsman

kinsman
This word is rarely used in modern English. It refers to a mals relative, properly a blood relation but often used in the seventeenth century of a man related by marriage. There are several vocative examples of the word in the Shakespearean plays. The word occurs most frequently in Romeo and Juliet, though usually in third person reference. At one point, however, Capulet addresses his nephew Tybalt as ‘kinsman’. The word seems to have been used almost as a synonym of ‘cousin’, a word which had a wider meaning in the seventeenth century than today.
